Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) to begin strike on January 2nd

Members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) have declared an indefinite strike to commence January 2, 2015.

They reiterated their accusations that all 36 state governors had deliberately resisted the implementation of a Federal High Court judgement to put judiciary funds under the first line charge.

By such refusal, the union said, they were frustrating the independence of the judiciary.

The workers added that following the failure to implement an MoU dated November 27, 2014, which was agreed on following interventions from various quarters, they had declared an indefinite strike to commence January 2, 2015.

The strike, it added, would continue until there was total compliance with the judgement of the court and the terms of the MoU.

JUSUN, in a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Marwan Mustapha Adamu, and National Assistant Secretary, Comrade Placidus Nnamani, said none of the judgment debtors of parties served with the order of the court had appealed against it till date.

The union recalled that it embarked on strikes at separate times during the year, but had called them off following mediations and interventions from relevant stakeholders including the Secretary to Government of the Federation, Minister of Labour, Principal Officers in the National Assembly, and others.

"...Based on the above, it was concluded that the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) will make deductions during the next FAAC meeting to the National Judicial Council in line with the court judgement based on the actual funds released..." the statement read.

It added that by refusing to implement, the judgement debtors(Governors) have conspired not to allow a constitutionally guaranteed arm of the government to exercise its due rights.

AirAsia flight QZ8501 from Indonesia to Singapore missing

Flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control, Malaysia-based AirAsia tweeted.
Air Asia has confirmed it has lost contact with flight QZ8501 with 161 people aboard after takeoff from Indonesia on the way to Singapore.

An Indonesian Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa said the aircraft, an Airbus A320-200 with the registration number PK-AXC, lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 6:17 am local time.

The plane had six crew and 155 passengers, including 16 children and one infant, the general manager of Surabaya's Juanda airport, Trikora Raharjo, told The Associated Press.

There were six foreigners - three South Koreans including an infant and one each from Singapore, British and Malaysia, said Raharjo. The rest were Indonesians, he said.

Flightradar24, a flight tracking website, said the plane was delivered in September 2008, which would make it six years old.

It said the plane was flying at 32,000 feet (9,700 meters), the regular cruising altitude for most jetliners, when the signal from the plane was lost.

The Malaysia-based AirAsia, which has dominated cheap travel in the region for years, has never lost a plane before.

This is the third major air incident for Southeast Asia this year. On March 8, Malaysia Airlines flight 370, a wide-bodied Boeing 777, went missing soon after taking off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing. It remains missing until this day with 239 people in one of the biggest aviation mysteries.

Another Malaysia Airlines flight, also a Boeing 777, was shot down over rebel-controlled eastern Ukraine while on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17. A total of 298 people on board were killed.

Officials said Flight QZ8501 had requested an unusual route before losing contact.

It lost communication with Jakarta's air traffic control at 7:24 a.m. Singapore time, about an hour before it was scheduled to land in Singapore, the Singapore Civil Aviation Authority said.

The contact was lost about 42 minutes after the single-aisle jetliner took off from Indonesia's Surabaya airport, Hadi Mustofa, an official of the transportation ministry told Indonesia's MetroTV.

In a statement, AirAsia Indonesia said it regretted to confirm that it had lost contact with the plane.

Patience Jonathan replies Gen. Buhari on scrapping the office of the First Lady

General Buhari stated yesterday in an interview with Weekly Trust that if elected as president in next year’s presidential election, he would abolish the office of the First Lady. The office, though not constitutionally recognized, has been maintained by past and present administrations and is even seen as being key in policy decisions. He said that ministries, which are constitutional, should be allowed to play their roles instead.

“There is the Ministry of Women Affairs, and so on. I was raised by my mother, as I lost my father when I was under 6 yars, so I know what a woman can do if given the chance”.

In a subtle way of replying Buhari’s comments, First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, emphasized the importance of the office of the First Lady in the Nigerian politics, saying that the office has been an avenue for mobilizing women for mass participation in politics.

She said this in Abia state during a reception organized for her by the Ohuhu community, her maternal home in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia state, yesterday.

She said the bid by politicians from the opposition camp to scrap the office of the First Lady would amount to sending the Nigerian women back to the kitchen if such came to fruition, adding,

“It is not our portion to go back to the kitchen. We have women that are capable. We can contribute our quota to the development of Nigeria”.

She also told the women not to vote for any politician who doesn’t respect women.
The First Lady had veered off from the address she was reading at the occasion when she directed the attention of guests to Buhari’s idea which she said was not practicable in the ongoing political dispensation because of the critical role women have been playing in politics.

I Married My Kid Sister –Orits Wiliki

For Orits Wiliki, playing music in the last 30 years has been a beautiful and fulfilling experience. For this reason, the reggae star deemed it fit to roll out the drums and celebrate his success on the stage last August.
Wiliki gathered his co-travellers on the music train, such as Ras Kimono, Majek Fashek, King Wadada and Victor Eshiet of the Mandators, and held a concert in Lagos. It was one of the biggest gatherings of Nigeria’s depleting clan of roots rock reggae stars in a long time.
Looking back at those pulsating years, the man that many music fans call ‘Koleman Revolutionary’ thinks they are worth celebrating. “The last 30 years were really exciting. They were the best part of my life, though we have had some hiccups here and there. There is no way it can be all smooth going, you know. But, by and large, I am happy that I am alive. I give God the glory,” he says, in an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday.
Aware that many music fans in Nigeria still do not know much about his origin, the celebrated musician insists that his roots are firmly in Ethiopia.
He says, “I am actually from Ethiopia. That is where my grandfather comes from. I don’t know why people can’t believe me. I am a full-fledged Nigerian, no doubt. I was born and raised here, but my ancestral roots remain in Ethiopia. I come from Adowa, a province in the Northern part of Ethiopia. My family naturalised as Nigerians in Warri. My father is Itsekiri, while my mother is partly Edo and Ondo. That is why I tell people that I have a complex origin. My real name is Rassam Wiliki. It was my grandfather’s name, too.”
The dreadlocked musician claims that music just happened to him, though the talent already existed in his family and his father, a talented musician and missionary who devoted most of his time and gift to the service of the Baptist Church, greatly influenced the path he chose for himself 30 years ago.
“At the age of eight, I was already an active member of the church choir. Before my father died at the age of 49, he had reached out to many people through evangelism. I wanted to do the same thing. So I made up my mind that I was going to reach out to people through music. I decided I would become a gospel musician. That is why everything I have done is inspired by the Holy Bible,” he says.
He chose reggae as the medium for spreading the Christian gospel because, in his own words, it was the best way that he could express himself. Even then, he preferred a modest career initially, shorn of the glitz and glamour of show business.
For awhile, Wiliki was contented with staying behind the scene, working as a studio producer alongside the legendary Lemmy Jackson and making other people stars, as he calls it. “There is hardly any of the older reggae musicians, from the Mandators, Ras Kimono to Majek Fashek, whose early works do not bear my imprint. I have produced all of them. Musically, I am older than all of them. That is why they call me ‘Pupa’,” he boasts.
But, like the proverbial goldfish, there was no hiding place for him. In no time, an incident occurred and finally exposed his real talent to the then managing director of Polygram Records. The encounter resulted in his first contract with the music company and the arrival of his first music album.
With a total of 10 albums to his credit and several hit songs to boot, Wiliki is, no doubt, one of the most successful musicians that Nigeria has ever known. Interestingly, his success also extends to the home front where he, unlike some other artistes, enjoys a blissful married life.
Unveiling the secret of his 20-year marriage to popular actress and singer, Becky, he says, “I married my kid sister – my mother’s last born. We are as close siblings can be. That is why we have stayed together for this long.”
However, the last few years have had their toll on his music, so much that he is no longer stuck to the traditional form of reggae. For obvious reasons, he has found it necessary to inject a bit of Afro hip hop and other idioms that are springing up into his music. “If you listen to my new work, ‘Pupa Reloaded’, you will find that it is not really the traditional stuff that we used to do. The album is a fair mix of reggae and some of today’s music styles. But it contains more spiritual messages than I have done before and the tempo is upbeat,” he says.
Like most other stars, the musician has a few regrets. One of them is the absence of structures that are vital to the growth and development of the music industry.
He says, “We still do not have the right structures that can sustain the music industry in Nigeria. The focus is still on shows; the business is not there. Don’t be deceived by what you are seeing. Most of the things you see are just part of the general hype. Nothing is really happening here.
“Although musicians live by what they do, the environment is not conducive. We have a problem on our hands. The issue of copyright collection and piracy, for example, is part of this problem. Is it not a shame that you buy a blank CD for N150 and go on to Alaba International Market to buy a copy of Orits Wiliki’s music for a paltry N30 – the same music that you purchase online with about $30 dollars? How will this encourage people from outside the country to invest in the industry?
“We still don’t have an effective distribution network in the country till this moment. How then can we sell records? Is it not a shame that by now we do not have records of the quantity of CDs that are sold in the country? If these problems are fixed, you will be amazed at the number of companies and investors that will be trooping in to do business with us.”
Orits believes that such structures, including a copyright system that is working well enough to check or reduce the incidence of piracy, are supposed to evolve within the music industry. But there should be an enabling environment to make this happen.
In spite of these challenges, he is pleased that there have been some positive changes in the industry. “Today, people are paid about N4m to perform at shows. It is the result of my struggle. I fought for it when I was Vice President of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria. Also there is a general awareness of what your copyrights are. People do not just take your work and use it without due permission,” he says.
Yet Orits says that if matters remain the way they are, he will be forced to talk even his own children out of starting a career in music.
Meanwhile, the artiste has concluded plans to stage the second phase of the 30 years-on-the-stage celebrations in Warri on Sunday, December 28.

Nokia N1 Android tablet launches in China on January

Back in November, Nokia (the part of the company that wasn't sold off to Microsoft) announced its first ever Android-running tablet, the N1. We got specs and pricing information then, along with a very vague release time frame of "Q1 2015".
Today though a rumor out of China has that down to an actual launch date - January 7. Because the translation from Chinese isn't perfect, it's not 100% clear right now if that's the day starting on which those in China will be able to purchase the Nokia N1, or just the date of its official introduction for the Chinese market.

Regardless of that, however, it looks like the "Q1" estimation is about to turn into a January release for the first ever Nokia tablet to run Android. This still doesn't tell us anything about when (or if) we might see the N1 elsewhere, since during the official announcement Nokia only mentioned China as the initial launch country. Other places are due to get the tablet at some later point in time. Hopefully that will happen soon, perhaps still inside that "Q1 2015" window, otherwise the N1's specs risk getting old soon. And the hype surrounding it may die down somewhat too.
The Nokia N1 comes with a 7.9-inch 2,048x1,536 touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front snapper, an Intel Atom Z3580 chipset with a 2.3 GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 5,300 mAh battery. It will run Android 5.0 Lollipop with Nokia's Z Launcher on top.

LG G2 Android 5.0 screenshot leaks

22 DECEMBER, 2014
The Lollipop update frenzy is well under way and LG's current flagship - the LG G3 was definitely not left behind with updates rolling out during all of the December, first in South Korea and then in a number of other countries. In the height of all this one question remains unanswered - will last year's LG flagship - the very popular LG G2 receive similar treatment.

A screenshot surfaced today that might shed some light on the matter. It appears to show a F320L version of the LG G2 running an Android 5.0.1 build. Even more encouragingly the UI, visible in the picture seems to bear all the design and visual characteristics of LG's new GUI, which first appeared on the G3. So it seems the year-old smartphone will receive the full update package, complete with the fresher interface.

This is all but justified, given that the LG G2 still packs quite the punch and can easily compete with current devices. Its more-than adequate Snapdragon 800 SoC, 2GB of RAM and 5.2-inch 1080p display are more than worthy to be adorned by Google's latest OS version.
One more important detail needs to be noted about the screenshot, namely that it is obviously taken from a F320L G2 unit, which is the LTE-A model, exclusive to South Korea. This of course comes as no surprise, given LG's track record of beginning update roll-out on the domestic market first. If the rumor is true and the photo real, Lollipop builds for the international LG G2 versions can't be far behind and should grace user's phones pretty soon.

CBN Bars Banks From Holding Funds In Dollars

Dollar-notes (1)The Central Bank of Nigeria has barred commercial banks from holding any part of their funds in United State dollars as it steps up efforts to reduce pressure on the naira.
The CBN, in a circulated dated December 17, 2014, ordered the banks to stop keeping one per cent of their shareholders’ funds in dollars as foreign exchange trading position at the close of each business day.
The move, according to the CBN, is meant to reduce the volatility being experienced in the naira-dollar exchange rate.
The circular, signed by the Director, Trade Exchange, CBN, Mr. Olakanmi Gbadamosi, read, “The CBN has observed the recent development in the foreign exchange market and its consequences on the stability of the exchange rate. In order to preserve the stability of the market, the foreign exchange trading position of individual authorised dealer, which is currently at one per cent of its shareholders’ fund unimpaired by losses, has been temporarily reviewed downward to zero per cent with immediate effect.
“Consequently, authorised dealers are therefore required to maintain zero per cent of their shareholders’ fund as foreign exchange trading position at the close of each business day. Any infraction of the requirement of this circular, in any way whatsoever, will attract appropriate sanctions, which may include suspension from the foreign exchange market.”
The CBN believes commercial banks are contributing to the continued fall of the naira by speculating against the naira through their dollar stocks.
This, it was learnt, informed the central bank’s decision to stop the banks from holding dollars. Close to $1bn will be withdrawn from the custody of the banks through the measure, according to analysts.
The Governor, CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, had reiterated that the central bank was not going back on the latest decision, adding that it would not tolerate speculation against the ailing naira.
“We do not want speculators in this market any longer. The banks are not supposed to hold any funds (in dollars) of their own. They are supposed to buy and sell currency on behalf of customers,” he said.
In a related development, the CBN on Thursday asked banks and members of the general public, who purchase dollar at the interbank forex market, to ensure that they utilised it within 48 hours.
A separate circular posted on the bank’s website read, “We write to inform all authorised dealers and the general public that with effect from the date of this circular, funds purchased by banks/ customers at the interbank forex market must be utilised within 48 hours from the date of purchase, failing which they should be returned to the CBN for repurchase at the bank’s buying rate.”
Analysts said the new measures by the CBN would be counterproductive and might not save the naira from further fall
Currency strategist at Ecobank Nigeria, Mr. Kunle Ezun, wrote in an economic note, “By this new foreign exchange regulation, inter-bank market liquidity is eroded, thereby creating a non-competitive market devoid of price transparency and discovery. Tightening the conditions that allow access to the dollar, while making no changes to how foreign exchange is supplied will further heighten the naira volatility.
“Overall, the circular will create more volatility that will require another set of CBN circulars to address the dollar supply and demand bottlenecks. As such, we expect the naira to trade between 190 and 195.”
The naira has been battered in recent months by plunging oil prices. Despite heavy intervention in the market, the central bank has failed to keep the currency in the new band it set on November 25 when it devalued the currency by eight per cent in a bid to halt the slide its foreign exchange reserves.
On whether the CBN might be forced to devalue the naira again owing the continued fall in its value, Emefiele told Reuters, “As the need arises, action will be taken. But we believe the currency is appropriately priced at this time.”
The naira fell to a record low of 188.85 to the dollar after the governor’s comments, well outside the bank’s target band.
The weak naira will also probably fuel inflation, which has been stable in single digits for two years. The impact on inflation is expected to be felt in January.

New Jay-Z Album

Jay-Z revealed the existence and release of his new album in a commercial during the NBA play-offs last week. This three minute long commercial featured Jay-Z rapping and working on the album in the studio with other hip-hop legends, such as Pharrell, and speaking about the inspiration for this album.

Jay-Z describes the vibe of MCHG (Magna Carta Holy Grail) as, “It's this duality of how do you navigate your way through this whole, this whole thing... through success, through failures, through all of this, and remain yourself.” The album is, symbolically, being released this 4th of July.

One of the biggest pieces of news regarding this album release, however, is Jay-Z’s partnership with Samsung for the release. Samsung has already purchased 1 million copies of Jay-Z’s new album. The plan is for Samsung to distribute these albums, free of charge, to users of the Samsung Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S III, and the Galaxy S 4. These albums are to be released a couple of days before the main release date on July 4th, giving these Samsung consumers a sneak peak of the highly anticipated album.

This partnership is rumored to have earned the rapper over $20 million in profit. Jay-Z is also not concerned about the 1 million albums NOT being included in record sales charts, because he believes that these 1 million free albums will not even put a dent in record sales during the first week of release, because the projected sales are exponentially larger.

How Android 5.0 lets you get raw for better photos

Flavio Gonzalez Vazquez' Camera FV-5 app for Android 5.0 lets photographers take raw photos with Nexus 5 or Nexus 6 phones.Flavio Gonzalez Vazquez' Camera FV-5 app for Android 5.0 lets photographers take raw photos with Nexus 5 or Nexus 6 phones.

For more than a decade, photographers using traditional cameras have been able to get higher image quality by "shooting raw." The new Android 5.0 brings that ability to mobile-phone photographers, with software support now arriving.
Raw photos come from a camera's image sensor before the camera processes them into the JPEG format, a format that's convenient when sharing photos with friends. Although raw photos involve a lot more work because the processing must be done by hand, photo enthusiasts like the flexibility raw provides.
Digital SLRs, mirrorless cameras and high-end compact cameras all come with raw capabilities, as the camera industry caters to photo enthusiasts willing to pay for image quality. But raw photo support is almost nonexistent in the mobile phone world. The exceptions so far have been some designs from Nokia -- now Microsoft's phone division -- including the Lumia 1520 and 1020.
Now you can add some Android devices to the list: the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6. And with an update to the FV-5 camera app, photographers can make use of the raw ability.
Photography has become central to mobile phones as people record their lives and, as mobile phone cameras steadily improve, artistically express themselves. Google's decision to add raw photo support capitalizes on this trend. It also gives Android phones a potential edge over Apple's iPhones, which have offered consistently top-notch photo quality but, so far, no support for raw photography.
